Its gonna get ugly
Holy Shit! is exactly what I was thinking.
The unexpected retirement of Sandra Day O'Connor this morning left me feeling ill. The thought that a conservative judge will be appointed to her place sickens me.
She was a moderate conservative, but most importantly, she was a majority maker. A swing vote. She used her strategic role to moderate the extremes, ultimately standing in the way of most of the conservative movement to turn the court and Roe v. Wade around.
Justice O'Connor has been a reliable vote supporting a woman's right to choose. Her departure has set off an all-out war by freedom minded groups trying to fend off the scourge of the right wing to take over the court and take away your liberty.
At the same time wingnut groups will be urging President Bush to follow through on his campaign promise to appoint judges and justices in the mold of conservative Justices Antonin Scalia
and Clarence Thomas. Both support overturning the abortion precedent, Roe v. Wade.
Don't let this happen! If you are worried about the next appointment, let your Senators know!!
Last week, in ruling that let local governments take personal property to build malls and other businesses, she wrote that the majority had unwisely handed more power to the powerful. I hope with her retirement that she hasn't done the same.
Never Surrender!!
