News from Camp

The third day of Rock Camp and we are still alive!

The first day at Camp, they had a merchandise table set up...I almost shit myself when perusing it....there is a cd sampler of last years showcase .....with The Bookworms on the cover!!!

Blaine is having a blast and learning a lot. Bands have already been formed and named....Blaine's band is That One Band. It is a foursome with guitar, drums, bass and a singer...they range in age from 9 to 17. I can't wait to hear them!

Arne followed her around awhile on the first day and she was very shy. I think being around the other girls and feeling singled out kinda weirded her out, after a few hours, she took off the mic and basically told them to leave her alone....they are going to try again today. I think she may be a little more relaxed now.

I will post pictures when I get home.
I will try to post again before Camp is over....maybe an audio post of the showcase.

Til then, ROCK ON!

No Paparazzi, Please!

It appears that I most definately will have a celebrity on my hands....

We were forwarded and email from Rock Camp to give us a heads up that Blaine will be approached to do an interview for Nick News!

She is trying not to burst, but the smile is so wide on her face that she resembles the Cheshire Cat.

We leave tomorrow for Camp.
I've got tons to do before, so I'm keeping the post short...hopefully I'll be able to post on the road. I'll try to swing by a library or maybe attempt an audio post...but no promises!

See you in a week!

Left! Left! Left, right, left!

Yesterday we went to see March of the Penguins at the Egyptian Theater. It was beautiful. And the theater was awesome! I recommend it highly.

The entrance to the theater is deceivingly tiny, with the inside being airy and open. The Egyptian Theater is a former Masonic Temple with a very cool deco/Egyptian theme. It has a HUGE screen and seats, probably, 600 people. It is home to the Seattle Int'l. Film Festival . They won me over with the espresso bar at the concession stand!

The movie is magnificently filmed, with soothing narration by Morgan Freeman. It shows the migration of the emperor penguin to its breeding grounds. A frank and true depiction of nature, it is void of the blood and guts seen in most wildlife documentaries. It is not all happiness and light though, there is saddness and death...of penguins, chicks and eggs. You see a sea leopard with a penguin in it's jaws, but don't see it ripping the penguin's flesh....you get the gyst of what has happened, without the gore. It is because of this that, I think this movie is appropriate for children of any age.
During the credits, you get a glimpse of the making of the movie, which I would watch as a feature itself...really interesting.

After watching this movie, I no longer view penguins as cute, waddling, tuxedo clad creatures. They are one of the toughest animals on earth!

The DVD is definately on my future xmas list!

After the movie, we hoofed the 20-something blocks to the ferry, stopping a few times along the way to shop. Mozzy(thats my mom), being an overindulgent grandparent, bought Blaine a $36 T-SHIRT from ZebraClub. A very trendy boutique, indeed....I would stab myself in the eye before paying that much for a friggin' t-shirt.

We arrived at the terminal just as loading had begun, paid our fare, and hurried onto the boat. We arrived on Bainbridge Island where my dad was waiting to pick us up...which was great because the uphill walk with bags and tired kid in tow would've sucked. After getting back to Mozzy's, we ordered a pizza and sat outside to eat it.

After dinner, Blaine and I drove home, talking about everything from the movie we had seen to her deciding not to shave her legs yet. It was a great day.

Take a pill or shut up *UPDATED

Its 10AM...Hubs is on his way home from work...normally, I'd think *cue 70's porno music* that was great, because Blaine is away for the weekend with friends....

But the guy has felt shitty with a sore throat for days and has a temp...after his relentless complaining, I made him an appointment to see the doctor this afternoon.

Is it just a guy thing? He absolutely hates to go to the doctor. What is so manly about being sick or in pain longer than you have to be? Why would you rather "ride out" a headache than take a tylenol?

I have a philosophy about illness/sickness...

If you don't take measures to make yourself better, like tylenol for a headache for instance, then you aren't allowed to bitch about it.

I just hope I don't get whatever bug he has...being sick in the summertime SUCKS.

*Went to the doctor's office...Hub's isn't going to die. He doesn't have strep, which we feared. He has a virus. Nothing can be done for him to make it go away faster...just ride it out, taking OTCs for comfort.

Hubs~ See?! I told you going to the doctor was a waste of time.
Me~ At least we know you don't have strep.
Hubs~And I had to give them a $20 copay for the privilege! My throat still hurts like a mother fucker.
Me~ Do you want some Advil?
Hubs~ Maybe later.
Me~ You'd rather bitch about it for a few more hours?
Hubs~Yes, knowing how much it bugs you makes me feel a little better. Gimme a kiss.

It was all there....in black & white

Yesterday I was looking through Blaine's baby book. I came across it while looking for a yearbook to settle an argument I was having with myself.

Flipping through the pages filled me with all sorts of conflicted feelings....because Blaine's baby book is not just a document of her first years, its a written account of my descent into mental darkness. It starts off wonderfully enough, recounting her perfectness and our awe at her every achievement, full of flourishing joy and noticably anal attention to detail....then, as the months pass, the handwriting visibly changes, the content weakens and entries become sporadic...dropping off in the tenth month, until it just ends. I never finished. It was as if I didn't care.

Some people may read this and think that I was just a busy or unorganized new mother, but that, sadly, is not the case.

I really don't remember very much about those days. Its all clouded in my mind. My memories are vague and hazy.

Looking through the book filled me with deep regret and a burning sense of guilt. I broke down, weeping.... How could I not have seen it at the time? It was SO obvious in those pages, how fucked up I was.

I am neither a religious person, nor a superstitiuos one. But I must believe in some kind of serendipidy...kismet...karma, if you will....because I MUST have done something right at some point in my life, to ensure that Blaine wouldn't suffer for my neglect. By all accounts, she is healthy, happy and well adjusted.

I am fortunate to have in my life, people who shielded her from my illness. A wonderful attentive father in Hubs, and caring, loving support in my parents, as well as his.

I stopped crying...wiping my nose on my sleeve...I wasn't sad anymore. I was thankful...for all those who loved Blaine so much when I couldn't.

The past few days.....

SATURDAY--

Around one o'clock, Arne and Shane (the doc guys) came to the house to interview Blaine. They were here for more than FOUR hours.

Immediately, Arne was a master at putting Blaine at ease. You'd never know that a kid that can play in front of hundreds of people might have a hard time talking, one on one, but she does. He just started talking to her...not "interviewing"at all.

First, they had her give a tour of our house(all 1400 sq. feet!). That only took about 30 seconds. Then they toured/filmed her room and all its nooks and crannies...taking close-ups of her books and her monkey collection. Then, setting her up with a mic, put her at the foot of the bed for some Q & A.

At first, I hung around...standing in the doorway, watching, listening. Then I started noticing that when she was unsure of an answer, she'd look to me. So after that, I made myself scarce by folding clothes(yeah, right) in the bedroom. I could still hear, but she couldn't see me.

Pulling a conversation out of Blaine is an art, a process...a long one. She is given to short, one word answers and shoulder shrugs. Her comfort level has to be fairly high before she lets loose with her true personality and quirky sense of humor. It was agonizing to watch, at first. I thought for sure they would give up, pack up and leave. But they persevered.

Arne has had lots of practice over the past few months talking to preteen girls. He is now quite adept at it. He finally got her on a roll, talking about her favorite kinds of books and authors. After that, everything else seemed to flow. They even got her to pick up her guitar and strum a little, which is a MIRACLE...she won't even let us listen to her practice!

After spending some time in her room chatting, they asked for a tour of the backyard. She had mentioned the trampoline earlier.

She gave them a tour. First, pointing out my lack of gardening skills and giggling. Then showing them our huge cherry tree, that she likes to climb. Then...the trampoline. They took some footage of her jumping and doing tricks. She seemed quite happy to show off for the camera.

Then they brought the show inside. Arne took a small handheld video camera out of his bag and explained, to Blaine, how to use it. After a short lesson, and some practice, he sent her on her way....told her to tape whatever she wanted in her room, outside, whatever. Told her to they would call her back when they were done talking to Mom. She took the camera and with a big grin, was already taping the animals as she walked down the hall to her room. I can't wait to see what she taped!

I figured this was when they would tell me more about the project, have me sign releases, and whatnot....

I was wrong. They wanted to interview me, too.

After putting the mic on and telling me to look at Arne, not the camera, we started. Arne talked about the project. He told me that they had played the BookWorms song on the radio. How friggin cool is that?! They asked me how we found out about camp, where we stay when we go, what kind of music do we listen to, was I musical as a kid....etc...

After a few questions, it came easily and was more like talking over coffee....Until they asked what I thought camp does for girls....

I started out okay.

"Camp empowers these girls...gives them a place to freely express themselves. They learn how to be strong women in a male dominated field. It teaches them to accept themselves and other girls AS THEY ARE....."

Then, I started to cry....DAMNIT....

"Camp teaches girls HOW TO TREAT OTHER GIRLS....teaches them that "mean girls" and the cruelty they inflict can be carried on throughout a girl's life, and that it has lasting effects...."

I asked them to stop. They were welling up, also. I was assured that I wasn't the first, and that when they started this project, they had no idea what kind of impact Camp had on girls and parents....or that it would have such an impact on them.

What started out as a film about a really cool and unusual camp for girls, had turned into a document of the empowerment and cathartic experience these girls have while attending Camp.

After drying my tears, and feeling sort of embarrassed, we finished up. About this time Hubs arrived home from work. They had us sign all the applicable forms and releases. They took some final footage of Blaine reading, stretched out on the trampoline. Then packed up all their gear and headed out to the car. We followed them out, chatting about ferry schedules and the easiest way for them to get back to the other side...

Shane never really stopped taping, the camera was like just another appendage...a part of him. While out in the driveway, he pointed the camera at the back of our Ramcharger. Its covered with stickers saying "My kid is an honor student at Punk Rock High", "Start young, Play loud!" and (my favorite) "I played the loudest at Rock'n'Roll Camp for Girls!"

While waiting for Shane to finish his final shots, I looked down at the grass and saw a four leaf clover...with leaves so big, it took up my entire palm! I presented it to Arne, wishing them luck, and telling them we'd see them in a couple weeks at Camp...

We then got into our cars and gave them an escort to the ferry dock(its easier than explaining how to get there)...honked our goodbyes, and they were off...

Blaine was drained and elated, flush with her brief encounter as a celebrity. I told her to get used to it....a rock star's life is hard.

We went out to dinner to celebrate and discuss the day. Blaine seemed very nonchalant about the whole affair, but I could tell she was bubbling inside.

--------------------
SUNDAY--

We woke up not really knowing what was going to happen that day. The weather was kind of shitty, and we had originally cleared the day for the interview. We were wide open to just about anything. Blaine suggested the Cultural Festival at the International District in Seattle...we had previously ruled it out because of thr interview schedule, but now were free to go.

After an excellent breakfast, made by Hubs, we were on our way. We caught the 10:00 ferry over.

After arriving, the parking gods smiled down on us, we found a spot really close to the event. For only SIX bucks! Thats CHEAP around here, folks! We locked up the car and headed out, toward the wonderful smells and sounds.

We shopped and wandered around for a couple of hours, checking out all the booths. Blaine played some games and got a crapload(thats a HUGE amount) of freebies...candies, posters, books and toys. We were having a blast. We decide to go to Uwajimaya grocery for lunch, and do some more shopping there. Whenever we are in the area, we like to go there for White Rabbit candy and rice candy. The rice candy has a prize, like Cracker Jacks. Both are delicious asian confections with rice paper wrapping that is wonderfully edible.

We were on our way back to the Festival, to see the Taiko drums, when Blaine complained of a headache. We kept walking, but she said it was getting worse....so we ended up back at the car. We decide to go home. It had been a pretty full day, anyway.

We got home late in the afternoon. Blaine seemed to be doing better, no longer complaining of a headache. I figured whatever it was that made her feel bad had passed.

A couple hours later, the phone rang and it was Arne, asking if they could come back for more . After conferring with Blaine, we said "Sure!" and plans were made for the following day....

--------------------
MONDAY--

8:00, Blaine awakens with a throat so sore she can hardly talk. She has a fever of 101...She feels like crap.

I call Arne with bad news and apologies.

Blaine is kinda pissy when ill, no matter how much Tylenol she's given. Shes one of those kids that doesn't like to be cuddled/coddled when sick....shes more like an injured animal that will bite if you approach. She wants to be left ALONE. Its not happening today.

He is quite gracious and instintively asks, "Is this really a sore throat, or is Blaine nervous, not wanting to do this?" Knowing how little girls are, I'm not offended, because that could very well be the case, if not for the fever. I tell him I will call him back...

After talking to Blaine, Hubs and I are reassured that the attention shes getting is okay with her. We let her know that she doesn't have to do this if she doesn't want to. And that she can say NO anytime. We don't want her to feel like she has to do this to please us. After some eyerolls and some and "you're so stupid" noises, we knew everything was okay.

I called Arne back, let him know that she REALLY was feeling ill, and that she still wants, very much, to continue with the project....that we will just have to do so, at camp, in a couple of weeks.

That pretty much sums up the past few days...quite an ride!

Blaine is starting to feel a bit better, more like herself, today...Tomorrow, if Blaine is up for it, Mozzy(thats my mom) wants to take us to see March of the Penguins. Blaine has been dying to see it.

Freaking right the fuck out!

Documentary filmmakers Arne johnson and Shane King were here to film Blaine yesterday for the Girls Rock! doc...
They were going to take a flight out today, back to the Bay Area...BUT
they decided they want to visit/film/interview Blaine some more!! They are coming back tomorrow!! My head is spinning!

Some of you asked what the hell was going on....I posted about it here awhile back.

ACK!

The documentary guys are coming tomorrow!

A day early. My house is a wreck. Time for speed cleaning. These are the times that I wish I had a wee bit o'mania to help me out. My house was always spotless in the good ol' days before medication.

Oh well, a documentary is supposed to show things as they really are....

Things that go BOOM!

Last night I tried to audio post part of the neighborhood fireworks show, but it was so loud that it didn't turn out. It was awesome, rivaling a professional display. My ears are still ringing.

Hubs pulled out the big guns this year, spent a ridiculous amount of money, and wowed us once again. My personal favorites are the HUGE 4" mortars with the breaks that make a heart shaped burst....so cool. With the combined artillery of the major pyros in the neighborhood, the show lasted quite a long time. We finally got out the brooms around 12:30, filling up 3 contractor size garbage bags. My back yard was littered with several dozen huge rocket sticks. We will continue picking up for the next week or so, as things get blown off roofs and out of trees.

He loves firework so much that we plan on attending The Celebration of Light in Vancouver next year for our vacation. We will spend the days siteseeing the Vancouver area and the nights watching the sky. Its beautiful. A pyrotechnic art show. I highly reccomend it.

Hubs is passing on his love of explosives to Blaine.Last night she lit her first mortar and blew up a basket of turnips and 4 Barbie dolls.

What is it about the male species that is so enamored with blowing stuff up? Hubs spent a shitload of money on fireworks, as usual. He went to the Suquamish Reservation to buy them from a place called Lil'Eagle Fireworks....

sound it out VERY SLOWLY...

Its gonna be kick ass!

Its gonna get ugly

Holy Shit! is exactly what I was thinking.

The unexpected retirement of Sandra Day O'Connor this morning left me feeling ill. The thought that a conservative judge will be appointed to her place sickens me.

She was a moderate conservative, but most importantly, she was a majority maker. A swing vote. She used her strategic role to moderate the extremes, ultimately standing in the way of most of the conservative movement to turn the court and Roe v. Wade around.

Justice O'Connor has been a reliable vote supporting a woman's right to choose. Her departure has set off an all-out war by freedom minded groups trying to fend off the scourge of the right wing to take over the court and take away your liberty.

At the same time wingnut groups will be urging President Bush to follow through on his campaign promise to appoint judges and justices in the mold of conservative Justices Antonin Scalia
and Clarence Thomas. Both support overturning the abortion precedent, Roe v. Wade.

Don't let this happen! If you are worried about the next appointment, let your Senators know!!

Last week, in ruling that let local governments take personal property to build malls and other businesses, she wrote that the majority had unwisely handed more power to the powerful. I hope with her retirement that she hasn't done the same.

Never Surrender!!
